Bulgaria Ready to Launch Tender for Plovdiv Airport Concession

Bulgaria could launch the tender for the concession of the Plovdiv airport in the near future after the transport and defence ministries have reached a settlement in their long-standing dispute over a runway stretch, officials said on Monday. The defence ministry agreed to give up its claims on the runway in exchange for land elsewhere, Bulgarian Transport Minister Petar Mutafchiev said. The transport ministry will also spend BGN 8 M as compensation for the expropriation of private property on and around the airport. The ministry plans to build an intermodal cargo terminal, using a nearby rail station. However, it remains yet unclear whether the terminal would be managed under concession or whether the ministry will set up a joint public-private venture company for that.

EBRD Lends Bulgaria's MKB Bank EUR 5 M for Energy Efficiency

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) inked a deal to extend Bulgarian bank MKB Unionbank a credit line worth EUR 5 M to help local industries reduce emission levels and boost energy efficiency. It builds up on a previous EUR 3 M extended to MKB in 2004, which helped nine private industrial business cut energy waste, the banks said in a joint statement on Monday. This project reflects the EBRD's strong emphasis on supporting Bulgaria's efforts in the development of an energy efficiency programme, which was one of the conditions for Bulgaria's accession to the EU, EBRD director for Bulgaria, James Hyslop, said. The development bank originally allocated EUR 50 M for six participating banks as part of its energy efficiency programme, which was supplemented by an additional EUR 55 M last year. MKB Unionbank, part of German banking group Bayern LB, had assets worth BGN 700 M at the end of April. EBRD is a minority shareholder in Unionbank.

Bulgaria Europe's Cheapest for Food and Alcohol

Bulgaria is the cheapest country in Europe for food and alcohol, according to a survey on food, beverages and tobacco carried out in 2006. In 2006, the price level of a comparable basket of food and non-alcoholic beverages was two and half times higher in the most expensive EU27 Member State than in the cheapest one, shows data from a report issued by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. The survey covered a total of approximately 500 comparable products. The range was similar for alcoholic beverages, but was much greater for tobacco where price levels were seven times higher. The highest price levels for food and non-alcoholic beverages were recorded in Denmark (142% of the EU27 average), Ireland (125%), Finland (120%) and Sweden (119%), and the lowest in Bulgaria (56%), Lithuania (64%), Poland and Slovakia (both 67%). For bread and cereals, price levels ranged from 41% of the EU27 average in Bulgaria and 56% in Slovakia to 150% in Denmark and 141% in Finland; for meat from 48% in Bulgaria and 50% in Lithuania to 149% in Denmark and 133% in Sweden; and for milk, cheese and eggs from 67% in Poland and 75% in Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia to 139% in Cyprus and 138% in Greece. The highest price levels for alcoholic beverages were registered in Ireland (181% of the EU27 average), Finland (170%), the United Kingdom (152%) and Sweden (145%), and the lowest in Bulgaria (69%), Slovakia (72%), Hungary (77%) and Lithuania (79%). For tobacco the highest price levels were observed in the United Kingdom (205% of the EU27 average), Ireland (186%), France (133%), Germany and Sweden (both 119%), and the lowest in Latvia (28%), Lithuania (30%), Romania (32%) and Estonia (41%).

The rise of the individual salaries of the state officials will depend on their latest attestation. The state officials who managed to get the highest mark on their work, which is 1, may get a pay rise up to 14%. For the ones who got the lowest mark 5, will not get any rise of their salaries.
